Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a growing global health crisis that threatens the effectiveness of antibiotics, essential for treating infections and enabling life-saving medical procedures like surgery, chemotherapy, and organ transplants. Without immediate and coordinated action, AMR is projected to surpass cancer as a leading cause of death within the next 25 years.
In recognition of this urgent threat, 20 national dental organisations have united to support World Antimicrobial Resistance Awareness Week (WAAW) 2024, themed “Educate. Advocate. Act Now.” This joint statement highlights the critical role of the dental profession in combating AMR by promoting responsible antimicrobial prescribing, educating patients, and leveraging innovative tools to support antimicrobial stewardship.
Through this collaborative effort, we aim to empower dental professionals to be leaders in safeguarding the effectiveness of antibiotics for current and future generations. Together, we can rise to this challenge and make a meaningful impact in the fight against AMR.
